Agentic Checkout Is Already Live on Half of DTC. We Called the Endpoints.

The agentic commerce conversation is almost entirely about intent — which platforms say they will support which protocol, and when. The PlatformDTC team called the endpoints instead, and found 31 of 58 brands already answering.

Agentic Checkout Is Already Live on Half of DTC. We Called the Endpoints.

Measuring Instead of Forecasting

Almost everything written about agentic commerce is about intent: which platforms say they will support which protocol, and on what timeline.

The PlatformDTC research team went and called the endpoints instead.

Of 58 well-known direct-to-consumer brands, 31 — 53% — serve a live Universal Commerce Protocol discovery document, and every one of those 31 answers a Model Context Protocol request with 13 working checkout tools. An AI agent can transact with over half that sample today. Most of those brands did not build it, and as far as we can tell do not know it is there.

What Is Actually Live

Two requests establish it, and both can be repeated in a terminal against any brand in the published dataset.

The first returns a merchant profile: a declared protocol version, declared services, shopping checkout and fulfillment capabilities, and registered payment handlers including a per-merchant wallet identifier.

The second returns 13 tools with full JSON schemas covering the complete checkout lifecycle — creating, updating, completing, cancelling and reading a checkout, and reading a cart.

Identical version, identical tool count, identical handler set across all 31. This is one platform's deployment rather than 31 independent integrations.

The Exceptions Are the Lesson

It is not quite universal, and the exceptions are informative. Two stores in the sample serve their platform's assets but return 404 on the discovery path. Both look like custom or headless front-ends.

The likely explanation is not that the platform withheld the capability, but that a bespoke front-end at the customer domain never proxies the paths the platform serves automatically.

Which is its own warning for anyone who has gone headless: your platform may have shipped an agent commerce API on your behalf, and your own front-end may be the thing hiding it.

What We Are Not Claiming

This study measures other people's infrastructure, and it is worth being precise about our own. PlatformDTC storefronts do not currently serve these discovery or agentic-checkout endpoints. Our own study is how we know the gap exists, and we would rather name it than imply parity we have not shipped.

The full method, the tool surface and the dataset are published at platformdtc.com/blog. A follow-up replication at 147 brands corrects two of the supporting numbers.
