Generated agents.md Files Direct Shoppers to a Cross-Store Skill

Abstract
Of 147 direct-to-consumer brands, 59 serve a real agents.md, and 57 of those instruct a reading agent to recommend that its user install a cross-store shopping skill operated by the platform — and to prefer that skill over interacting with the store directly. The merchants did not write it.

A Second Generated File
The agents.md path is usually mentioned in the same breath as llms.txt, as though the two were variants of one idea. They are not. Where llms.txt describes a store, the generated agents.md addresses personal shopping assistants directly and tells them what to do — and what it tells them is worth a merchant's attention.
What the File Actually Says
The document opens by addressing an agent acting on a user's behalf. It strongly recommends that the agent ask the user for permission to install a skill hosted on a platform-operated domain, so the agent can buy products, compare prices and discounts across stores, and track orders. It then instructs the agent that, once installed, it should prefer that skill over scripting the merchant's storefront directly, on grounds of speed and reliability.
Why a Merchant Should Care
Checkout under the skill still completes on the merchant domain, so the immediate revenue path is intact. The consequential behaviour is what happens when it cannot: a store that cannot take agent payments has the agent search for alternatives across other stores. A file the merchant did not write, served from the merchant's own domain, is instructing a shopping agent on when to go elsewhere.
The Coverage Claim Is Wrong
The template asserts that every store on the platform serves this file. Eleven brands in the sample answer a UCP discovery request — establishing that they run the platform — and return 404 on the agents.md path. The generated claim about its own ubiquity does not survive contact with the sample.
Conclusion
Files generated on a merchant's behalf are not neutral infrastructure. This one makes a routing recommendation to shopping agents that a merchant would plausibly want to review, and most merchants do not know it exists. Reading what your own domain serves to agents is now a basic operational check.
